iPhone dominates the ranking of the best-selling smartphones of 2023: Apple occupies the top 7 positions
7 positions out of 10 in the global ranking of the best-selling smartphones of 2023: this is the result obtained by Apple last year. And the even more serious thing, for competitors, of course, is that they are the top 7 positions.
The ranking released by Counterpoint gives us a rather precise picture of what the smartphone market is at present. Of the many brands in circulation only two are in the top 10: Apple and samsung. However, the Korean manufacturer can do anything but celebrate: it occupies the last 3 positions in the ranking, and its best-selling devices are all low-end (A14 5G and A14 4G and A04e).
The absolute best seller of 2023 is iPhone 14, the basic model, reconfirming that compact models without big frills still have their market. Next are the two Pros, 14 Pro Max and 14 Pro, and then gradually descend iPhone 13, 15 Pro Max, Pro and 15.
There are other interesting data to take into account. To begin, iPhone 14which takes the scepter of best-selling smartphone of 2023, has mainly achieved this milestone thanks to USA and China, responsible for half of the total devices sold by Apple. Also interesting is the fact that the base model of the 14 series contributed to 19% of total iPhone sales in 2023, a lower value than that recorded by the iPhone 13 in 2022 (28%). So yes, there is still interest in compact models, but the few differences between iPhone 13 and 14 have meant that users prefer to evaluate other more expensive models. Emerging markets are also contributing to Apple’s success in 2023. In India, Africa and the Middle East, iPhones saw a strong sales boost last year.
Good for Apple in short. Bad for the market? Likely. Fans of other brands have always been convinced that Apple releases new things slowly, and even if this were indeed the case, it apparently is a winning strategy.
The truth is that perhaps users have grown tired of the race for megapixels, 180W charging and software functions that no one uses, preferring instead more stable and “standard” experiences. Perhaps the time has come for other smartphone manufacturers to start moving following a very specific strategy, without necessarily chasing the latest innovations to the detriment of what really interests users. Just as the iPad almost became synonymous with the tablet and just as the iPod became synonymous with the MP3 player, perhaps the iPhone is truly becoming synonymous with the smartphone. Or maybe it’s just fashion, another of the statements that iPhone detractors like so much.
