Goodbye to LineageOS 18.1: here’s why and what to do
Some important news is coming for those who are passionate about modding and who perhaps have a build of the on their smartphone LineageOS (here is the guide to root permissions on Android).
The LineageOS team, i.e. the group of developers who created and maintains one of the currently most popular and updated custom ROMs on the Android scene, has announced the closure from the LineageOS 18.1.
The closure comes because, as explained on the official blog of the custom ROM, on February 5th Google published the security bulletin Final Android for Android 11. This is the Android base of LineageOS 18.1, and it means that no more updates will arrive security for this Android version.
Therefore, the LineageOS team decided to release the final build of LineageOS 18.1. This means that no further updates will arrive subsequently.
The Lineage team also discussed the possibility of carrying out the backport of security bulletins referring to more recent versions of Android, in order to continue the development of LineageOS 18.1, but concluded that it would be a too much effort considering the rest of the development that awaits the team with the new versions of the Lineage.
So what to do if you have a smartphone with LineageOS 18.1? If the model is supported by new versions of the custom ROM then definitely the best choice is to update. Otherwise you will have to settle for the latest final build, or opt for one unofficial build or radically change custom ROMs (here are the best Android custom ROMs).
