Bad start to the year for WhatsApp users on Android: the backup tile arrives

Whatsapp he announced it last November: from December 2023 Android users participating in the program beta of the app (and later all the others) will begin to no longer be able to use it unlimited space on Google Drive for theirs backup (maybe it’s a good time to see how to backup WhatsApp).

With a few days, perhaps weeks, of delay, the popular app of messaging he kept the promise, and since yesterday some Android users have received the dreaded one in the latest beta novelty, that is, the notice that you no longer have sufficient space on the Google storage platform to carry out the backup.

For those who don’t know, we remind you that since 2015 Whatsapp allows you to store your chats and multimedia content as photo And video on the Google cloud, without this eroding the 15GB Of free space which are obtained with a Google account (and which is used for all the platform’s services, from Gmail to Google Photos).

This is only valid for Android users, as users iPhone they lean on iCloud, which only offers 5 GB free and does not allow unlimited backup of Whatsapp (i.e. it erodes the available space).

At the end of 2023, however, things changed, e.g Whatsapp announced the alignment for users of the little green robot to the policies applied to users of the apple.

Now Android beta users have started confirming that the WhatsApp backup, which includes chats, images and videos, counts towards the available storage space in Google Drive, as they have started receiving the warning message. Users will receive a notification 30 days before the implementation of the new feature and who will have exhausted it storage space free on Google Drive will be required to purchase additional space (i.e. switch to one of the Google One plans from 1.99 euros per month).

As we have said, in fact, in case of insufficient space it will no longer be possible to carry out backup (although it is not very clear what will happen to the backup currently archived which exceeds the quota, as they don’t specify it in Google’s announcement, but it will probably no longer be accessible).

This is not the only solution. The alternative is transfer the chats on PC manually, as we have shown in the guide linked at the beginning of the article, or free up space on Google Drive by deleting documents, photos or Gmail attachments. Or not yet save videos (which take up more space) in the backup of Whatsapp, which allows you to have a backup that takes up much less space.

At the moment we don’t know when WhatsApp will implement the news to all users of the stable channelas neither Google nor the messaging app have indicated dates, but the road seems clear and GrandeG has stated that to sweeten the pill some users will have access to promotions Google One.

We cannot confirm the news because, despite having installed the latest beta of the app version 2.24.1.6, we do not have the problem of the space, but we will keep you updated.
