We’re safe with Chrome: how the new real-time protection works
Google Chrome just received some interesting news regarding the safety aspect (speaking of browsers, here are the best web browsers around).
Google has in fact announced some interesting news regarding security features integrated into Chrome, which will involve millions and millions of users all over the world, given that Chrome is among the most popular of all.
The innovation that interests us most consists in the introduction of real-time protection on Chrome. To fully understand what it is and how it works, it is worth underlining that for several years now Chrome has integrated a protection service called Safe Browsing to warn users if they are about to access a unsafe site.
To give you an idea of the reach of Safe Browsing, just think of what the tool runs on Chrome 5 billion of devices, to protect them from possible phishing and malware practices. Safe Browsing currently scans 10 billion URLs per day.
Its database containing potentially malicious URLs is updated every 30 or 60 minutes on Google servers.
The innovation introduced by Google concerns precisely this aspect. The Safe Browsing database update will now occur in real time, exponentially increasing the safety of the instrument. This is because it has now been verified that malicious URLs can be generated and modified within 10 minutes. Google estimates that with this innovation it will be able to block the 25% more of phishing attempts.
This update for Safe Browsing is coming to Chrome for desktop and within the next few weeks also on Android. But also for iOS some news is coming. These concern Google’s password monitoring tool, called Password Checkup.
The update for Password Checkup for Chrome on iOS is the ability to see what passwords are believed weak or recycled, as well as notifying you when a password is compromised. As you can see from the screenshot below, they will come notified also passwords that fall into these two categories, with the suggestion to update them.
