Google Files may have lost its bottom bar, but it’s now much more than just a file manager

It’s time for changes Files, Google’s great file management app for research of documents and Images in your phone, as well as to keep it always clean (do you know how to open a cbr file on Android?).

In fact, the app recently received a series of updates that removed the bottom bar and the integration with Sharing nearby (which has since become Quick Share), and has now just gained a button Scan.

Opening Files (we found it in version 1.2729.610141523.0 of the app, but it was also there in the previous version), you will in fact find a new floating button bottom right (image below, left).

Tapping it will open the camera view camera, with the possibility to choose between Manual shooting or Multiple shot (default).

In both cases it is instrument will try to locate a document to scan, but with the Multiple shot the images will be acquired automatically (if you want, you can also upload images from the gallery).

TO scan occurred, you can choose whether add Other pictures, modify them using the toolbar at the bottom or start again from the beginning (unfortunately you cannot return to the acquisition interface, but only to the Files Home).

On the left, Scan to Files button. In the center, scanning interface. On the right, editing interface

When you’re done, tap the button end at the top right and the documents will be saved as PDFs in one new folder in your phone’s memory, which you can find in Internal memory > Files by Google > Scanned.

The function is identical to the one introduced in Google Drive in November, only the appearance of the button changes, which in Google Drive it’s a camera image while here it’s a little clearer, with a shot of a document and writing Scan.

In fact, the tool takes advantage of the new Document Scanner API of ML Kit to recognize and process documents on the device, but there is another difference with Drive which concerns the privacy.

In fact, at the bottom of the scan frame you will find a writing that explains how Files will be accessed only to scanned images.

Touching the “the” a pop-up window will appear on the right with a more in-depth explanation:

Secure Scanning by Google – Files by Google requires Google Play Services to scan documents on its behalf. The scan is performed on your device and only the final scanned previews will be shared with Files by Google.

As we anticipated, you can find the function in the latest version of the app 1.2729.x.
