The future of WhatsApp: what is interoperability with other messaging apps

In Europe a major change of pace is about to take place for all those dominant service providers, known as gatekeeper. This will lead to significant changes in the technology sector, which will also affect WhatsApp. In the last few hours, important information has arrived from the top management of the messaging platform on the matter to interoperability.

WhatsApp is in fact about to introduce interoperability with other messaging apps. This means that the WhatsApp giant will allow you to log in and interact with third-party messaging appsand viceversa.

It will therefore also be possible exchange messages WhatsApp from other messaging apps, such as iMessage, Telegram, Google Messages and Signal. As well as from WhatsApp it will be possible to access and exchange messages on the platforms just mentioned.

What has just been reported has been confirmed by Dick Brouwerthe technical director of WhatsApp, who granted an interview to Wired. Dick Brouwer confirmed the interoperability between WhatsApp and other messaging platforms will support text messages, images, voice messages, videos and general files.

Practically, they will be supported all types of content currently supported on WhatsApp.

It’s not all that simple as it seems. Halfthe company that currently owns WhatsApp, has already specified that all platforms intending to be interoperable with WhatsApp will have to meet the safety requirements requested by WhatsApp. This mainly concerns the typology of encryption engaged.

Furthermore, such companies will have to sign contracts to make interoperability with WhatsApp effective. These concerns are more than legitimate on Meta’s part, even if from a certain point of view they actually could limit from the start interoperability. Meta finds itself managing one of the most impressive messaging platforms, with its users exchanging billions personal informations everyday. Therefore, it is more than legitimate to worry about security when opening up to external entities.

Dick Brouwer confirmed that we will definitely know more at March. In fact, the month of March is the one in which the Digital Market Act, wanted by the European Union, set the deadline for the so-called gatekeepers to activate measures that should promote competition in terms of digital services.
