Google Drive’s file organization is perhaps not the best there is. Finding something at a glance is not immediate, including shared files, recent files, special files, suggestions, activities, workspaces, and so on and so forth. Luckily Google is working on another new feature it might simplify the things. Unless complicate them further. Let’s talk about categories for files.
According to some code snippets present in the Google Drive app, and discovered by TheSpAndroid, 12 predefined categories are currently being worked on, but that doesn’t mean the user won’t be able to add more personalized. These are:
- car
- Bank
- Expenses
- Home
- Identity
- Insurance
- Medicine
- Animals
- School
- Taxes
- Trips
- Work
What is the difference between a category and a folder? For example, the fact that the same file can have multiple categories. So, rather than simply labeling a file as “special” and then finding it mixed up with other completely different files, with categories it will be quicker to find all the documents relating to household expenses, or recover your driving licence, passport and identity card, or still manage files related to an upcoming trip.
This feature is also expected to come to all Google Drive implementations, i.e Android, iOS and the version web, although the first traces were found in the Android app, although not yet available to the public. However, the screenshots below illustrate its possible functioning, which will further expand the already rich menu available on Drive for each file.
The possible problem it’s precisely this: adding an additional item in an app already crowded with options risks both going unnoticed and being a drop in the bucket. Perhaps, and we underline perhaps, instead of adding Google, it could think about simplify. But for now that doesn’t seem to be the chosen direction.
In any case, it is not certain that the categories will arrive soon, these things often remain in the works for months, and in the same way its release is not even a given. As soon as it is available, we will let you know. In the meantime you can read our guide on how to free up space on Google Drive, since it is shared with Gmail and Google Photos, and it’s never enough!
