PS VR2 doesn’t sell: would Sony have made a drastic decision?
When we tried PlayStation VR2 (check out our review in case you missed it) we were impressed by the visual quality and comfort of the device, which was a huge evolution over PS VR.
Nonetheless, the price high and the fact of being limited to PS5 (even if Sony has announced that it is working to allow it to be used with PCs too) have not contributed to its success and according to Bloomberg the sales have slowed down so much that Sony would have paused the production.
PS VR2 sales are not going well
Let’s start with the official data. Six weeks after launch, Sony announced that PS VR2 had sold nearly 600,000 units, while PS VR had sold in five millions of units.
At this point, though, Sony hasn’t shared anything else data. According to some analysts, the viewer had sold just over one million units in his first year, ea December 2023 Sony Interactive Entertainment’s head of global business Eric Lempel had told the Financial Times that PS VR2 was”a challenging category right now“, adding that he thought that “there was a higher expectation” regarding virtual reality in the field of gaming.
RoadToVR also monitored sales on Amazon of Meta Quest 2 and 3 compared to the PSVR2 during the holiday season and found that sales of Meta’s headsets significantly outpaced those of PS VR2.
Earlier this year, Sony announced a number of games coming to the device, but none of them are from PlayStation Studios. The news was followed by the announcement of 900 layoffs just for PlayStation Studios, and the imminent closure of the London studio, focused on the development of virtual reality.
All this to say that’s no good.
Production blocked or not, where will PS VR2 go?
Takashi Mochizuki of Bloomberg, however, shared much more worrying news. According to the journalist, PS VR2 has been produced in well over two million of units, but sales slowed so much that the company reportedly decided to pause it production.
The intention would be to dispose of the accumulated inventories, but some question the words of Mochizuki. In the past he has made some incorrect predictions about Sony regarding production numbers, estimates and sales PS5 And PS VR2as well as the blocking of PS4 production.
In any case, the future is not rosy. While on the one hand PC support would open the doors of PS VR2 to many more games otherwise not availablethe issue of lack of support from Sony is certainly not a good one indication of health.
