Windows 11 24H2 will not support older processors: here’s which ones

Important news arrives from Microsoft. In particular, some PCs with older CPUs will not be able to run the next version of Windows 11, that is 24H2. In fact, this version will be the first to no longer boot on CPUs without the instruction POPCNT. So, simply put, PCs that are over 15 years old will no longer be able to run the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system.

As already mentioned at the beginning, Windows 11 24H2 will require a CPU instruction called POPCNT (population count), which has become standard on CPUs in the mid-2000s with AMD’s Barcelona architecture, followed by Intel’s first generation Core i series CPUs. In this sense, for example, there are still users who use PCs equipped with Intel Core 2 Duo, which manage to run Windows 11, albeit with some difficulty (since in theory they are not compatible with this operating system). Following this update, however, the operating system will simply boot no longer.

This novelty, in any case, does not affect more modern PCs that are not also supported by Windows 11, such as those powered by chips Intel 7th-Gen or AMD Ryzen 1000 series. So, if you managed to install Windows 11 on a slightly older PC, you should still be able to update to the 24H2 version.
