Valve reveals that the next generation of Steam Deck will have to wait (and quite a bit)

Valve launched the Steam Deck console in 2022, arousing some interest among gaming enthusiasts. However, despite the fact that little time has passed since its debut, there is already discussion about the next generation of the device. In particular, during the promotion of the upcoming launch of the OLED Steam DeckValve product designer Lawrence Yang confirmed that we will have to wait a little longer for the next generation of the console, at least two years.

Going into the details of the news, the next generation will guarantee performances of “new generation”. At the moment, the current model is based on an AMD platform with microarchitecture dating back to 2019 and RDNA 2 graphics from 2020. On the autonomy side, there is a 40 Wh battery, which can provide up to 8 hours of battery life. This aspect was among the most criticized by users, who complained that the duration was not always optimal. As for the future, Valve revealed to the media that company executives are satisfied with the OLED model and they’ll wait a few years for Yang and his team to perfect the next-gen Steam Deck.

Finally, discussing with Polygon, Yang would have revealed that the second generation should not be the last: in fact, the company would like to develop other Steam Deck models. In any case, as already mentioned at the beginning, there will not be an annual launch of the console. About this, both Yang and the Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyatthey revealed that the objective it is not to follow other companies’ models in terms of annual releases.
