WhatsApp, username and PIN coming soon to avoid unwanted messages

WhatsApp is also getting usernames , unique usernames that allow instant messaging service members to share their contact without providing their phone number. This is yet another feature that Meta’s app borrows from Telegram , but it will greatly help users in safeguarding their privacy.

Traces of this novelty had already emerged a few months ago , now version 2.24.18.2 of the Beta for Android confirms that Whatsapp is working on this feature with PIN support . As you can see from the screenshot below, users will be able to choose a unique name to associate with their account . Those who already have the user’s phone number will continue to see it, the username can be shared to start new conversations.

Additionally, to provide a higher level of privacy, WhatsApp is also working on supporting a PIN code to be associated with usernames to prevent unwanted messages. The user will be able to choose a four-digit code that will only be asked of those who interact for the first time and not frequent contacts. This new solution serves to prevent unwanted contacts from starting a chat, thus allowing users to have greater control over who can contact them.

The username and PIN support features are currently in development – so they are not visible even to those enrolled in the beta program – and will be released in an upcoming update.
