Google is reportedly exploring the possibility of developing a foldable clamshell device called the “Pixel Flip,” in addition to its recently introduced Pixel Fold. The information was shared by George Hwang, the product manager of Google Pixel, during an interview at Google I/O 2023. Hwang revealed that Google’s interest in the clamshell form factor arose from observing Chinese companies releasing both foldable and flip-style devices. While the focus is currently on the Pixel Fold, Google intends to introduce the Pixel Flip at a later date.
Foldable devices and flip phones serve different purposes. Foldables feature a large internal display akin to a tablet, complemented by an external display for smartphone-like usage when closed. Flip phones, on the other hand, provide the convenience of easily fitting into a pocket while offering a smartphone-sized display when unfolded, typically ranging from 6.2 to 6.8 inches. These devices usually sport smaller external displays for selfies, displaying notifications, time, and select apps.
At present, Google’s primary focus is on perfecting the Pixel Fold to ensure it becomes an everyday device rather than just a novelty. However, it’s worth noting that the company is not ruling out other form factors like the clamshell foldable to expand its Pixel product lineup. Manufacturers are increasingly emphasizing the size of external displays on flip phones, with Motorola planning to enlarge the Razr 40 Ultra’s external display to a substantial 3.5 inches. Samsung, the creator of the Galaxy Z Flip, is also working on a 3.4-inch external display for the Z Flip 5.
