AI everywhere: even Windows 11 Notepad already integrates Copilot

Notepad gets smarter, thanks to AI. Microsoft has released an update that integrates Copilot into the popular text editor.

Apparently, it doesn’t matter if an application is simple. Microsoft is committed to integrating its AI into all Windows 11 applications. Copilot comes to Notepad, but it is not about directly integrating the chatbot.

It is an application that is not interested in “promoting” too much, because what it wants is for people to use its paid Office. Or as it is called now, Microsoft 365. But it is such a simple text editor that some improvements to modernize it won’t hurt anyone…

This is the new Notepad with AI

Barely updated for more than a decade, Microsoft started giving Notepad some love a few months ago when it added the desired tabs.

Finally, it is no longer mandatory to open multiple copies of the Notebook if you want to edit several documents at the same time. You can now open them in different tabs.

This update also released new keyboard shortcuts for tab managementas well as some improvements to unsaved file handling, such as automatic file name/tab title generation based on content, and an updated unsaved changes indicator.

Now, Microsoft announces on its blog a new update to Notepad that is now available for users. Insiders (beta phase). So it won’t take long to reach everyone.

As we say, Copilot artificial intelligence has been integrated into the application. But not as a chatbot, but when highlighting text.

When you are reading a text with Notepad and you see something that you do not understand, or you need more information, simply highlight it with the mouse cursor, and press the right button to bring up a menu where you can choose the option: “Explanation with Copilot”:

Microsoft

Microsoft AI will explain to you what the text means. It doesn’t have to be just a piece of writing. You can also do it with programming code, a log file, or literally whatever you want.

Additionally, this feature can be directly accessed via the new keyboard shortcut CTRL + E.

Copilot artificial intelligence comes to Notepadshowing that Microsoft wants to integrate it into all Windows 11 applications, no matter how simple they are.
