Check your phone right now: Google Calendar could stop working for you very soon

Google Calendar could no longer be compatible with versions of the Android operating system prior to Android 8. This significant change puts in check a considerable number of users around the world who routinely use the application.

As reported by TheSpAndroid, Google Calendar has introduced a change in its code that signals the end of support for Android versions prior to 8. The discovery of code, in the latest version of the application, suggests that the change could be imminent.

Although it has not yet been officially announced, the discovery indicates that Google is about to take a crucial step. So far, no official statement has been issued by Google, but the evidence is clear.

Support for devices running on older versions of Android, such as Android 7 and earlier, is coming to an end. This is particularly relevant if we consider that many users still use them.

Importantly, Android 8 was released in August 2017, and the last Android 7.1.2 update dates back to April 2017. Since then, we have seen the release of the most recent version, Android 14, in October 2023.

Although some of these older devices might be eligible for upgrades to newer versions of the operating system, not all of them will have this option.

If you have an older Android, you may need to find an alternative to Google Calendar

For affected users, this could mean limited access to an essential organizing and planning tool. However, Google Calendar is expected to remain accessible through mobile browsers on these devices, offering an alternative solution.

In addition to feature improvements, security is likely a key factor behind this change. With each new version of Android, Google has significantly strengthened the security of the operating system.

This step could be an effort to encourage the transition to more secure and updated systems. In any case, if you have an old Android, you may have to look for alternatives to continue using Google Calendar.
