Fastweb announces a turning point on the FWA strategy: it focuses on the 5G mobile network

Fastweb has announced something new in the segment FWA. In particular, the operator will no longer develop its network Dedicated Ultra FWA 5G. In fact, for the further expansion of coverage for FWA services, it will exploit the 5G mobile network created through the agreement with WINDTRE.

Specifically, in the Swisscom Group’s 2023 financial results documents it was specified that: “The expansion of the FWA network will use the company’s proprietary 5G network infrastructure in the future based on an agreement with WINDTRE. In contrast, the previous strategy of creating a dedicated FWA network outside areas with fiber optic access (FTTH) is abandoned. The strategic adjustment led to the recognition of expenses of 61 million euros in Fastweb’s operating result before depreciation in 2023. Impairment losses on property, plant and machinery and on rights were also recognised. of use”.

As already mentioned previously, since 2020, Fastweb has been committed together with WINDTRE in the creation of a 5G mobile network, with the aim of cover 90% of the population by 2026. In this sense, in the operator’s financial results updated to December 31, 2023the growth of 5G coverage in Italy was highlighted (in detail, 72% of the national population was reached at the end of 2023).
