Apple just launched critical updates for iOS, iPadOS and macOS aimed at resolving two zero-day exploits that represent a very serious threat to the privacy of users.

Discovered in the WebKit browser engine used by Safari on all Apple platforms, they have already been exploited, so the urgency to apply these updates is very real.
The vulnerabilities, detailed in Apple’s security notes, manifest in the processing of web content, an essential component of the browsing experience.

One of the problems identified lies in an out-of-bounds reading error. This implies that the program attempts to access data beyond the limits assigned for that particular operation. As a result, there is a possibility that sensitive information stored in memory may be revealed.

Apple resolves two serious vulnerabilities in iOS, iPadOS and macOS

As mentioned before, and according to Apple, they have been exploited in versions prior to iOS 16.7.1. The magnitude of these vulnerabilities is worth taking into account, since they affect devices that use iOS, iPadOS and macOS.

Apple has specifically identified the affected products, including iPhone models from XS onwards, various iPad Pro models, and operating systems such as macOS Monterey, macOS Ventura, and macOS Sonoma.

Specifically, they are the following:

  • iPhone XS and later.
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch first generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 6th generation and later, and iPad mini fifth generation and later.
  • macOS Monterey, macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma.

For iOS devices, updating to iOS 17.1.2 can be done via Settings, General, Update. software. It’s important to note that installation requires at least 7 GB of available storage, which could involve deleting files for those who are fairly tight on storage.
