OpenAI one step away from Skynet: should we worry?

OpenAI, in recent years, has gained so much popularity, especially thanks to its contribution in the field of artificial intelligence. However, the last few weeks have been quite chaotic, starting with the departure – followed by the rapprochement – of CEO Sam Altman. The most important news, however, is another, namely that the company, as supported by a letter from some researchers addressed to the Board of Directors, is close to a potential turning point in the field of AI. In particular, according to The Information, OpenAI could develop the superintelligence artificial within this decade or even earlier (known as AGIacronym for artificial general intelligence).

Getting to the heart of the news, the superintelligence would consist of an artificial intelligence system that would far surpass chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot, exceeding the cognitive capabilities of humans. The project would be called Q-Star and it would seem that it is capable of perfectly solving the mathematical problems of elementary schools.

This would be the first step for OpenAI, which would exploit all this to explore higher levels. In fact, unlike generative AI, AGI would be able to learn and understand.

Returning to the recent past, finally, according to Reuters, researchers would have highlighted the danger of this turning point if not elaborate measures had been taken to control it. It is therefore believed that this was the reason for Altman’s dismissal, given that the board members were inclined towards a more reasoned approach to this type of technology.
