The new Toyota gearbox for electric cars (14 gears!)

Interesting news from the Toyota universe. The Japanese car manufacturer would have the intention to introduce a simulated manual transmission on their electric vehicles. In this sense, a patent application from the company has allowed us to shed some light on this project, which would not include any limit on the number of parts that this type of device can have.

Getting to the heart of the news, the motorist you can select the number of reports you want. In the document, in fact, we can read that “The number of virtual gear stages may be six or more or less than six.” Furthermore, it is specified that the driver will be able to select the desired scheme according to his preferences. Moving on to select a gear, it will happen as if it were a normal manual one (however, the lever can return to the neutral position after its use). Step by step, the virtual schema will move to the next set of “reports”.

In practice, after selecting sixth gear, the available ratios will be changed: the driver will therefore be invited to trigger the running week and all subsequent ones (or to go down to the fifth).

In short, a mechanism that is not exactly simple and for this very reason car manufacturers have always opted for a manual with a maximum of seven gears. However, Toyota, given that this is a simulated manual gearbox only, would have thought it a good idea to give drivers the option of “fourteenth gear”.
