This is the new mandatory certificate that electric scooter users will have to have in January 2024

As the number of electric scooters increases, it is necessary to guarantee the safety of both the users themselves, pedestrians and other vehicles. That’s why On January 22, 2024, the circulation certificate for VMPs (Personal Mobility Vehicles) comes into force.mandatory for all scooters sold from that day on.

This circulation certificate must be requested by the manufacturer from the DGT, the buyer only has to ensure that it is included with the documentation of the electric scooter, when purchasing it.

The circulation certificate will be mandatory to access the insurance. If you suffer an accident, you do not have the driving certificate and the fault is yours, the insurance is not involved, and it is up to you to pay the costs of the accident.

How to get the certification certificate

As explained by the DGT on its website, this certificate is only mandatory for electric scooters and other VPM purchased after January 22, 2024. If you have a scooter purchased before that date, the certificate is not mandatory until January 22, 2027.

Even so, it is possible that some type of special insurance may be requested from you in order to contract it. In that case, you can ask the manufacturer for the certificate (if it has one), or request it at the Central Traffic Headquarters, presenting the VPM technical sheet stamped by the manufacturer.

If you have an electric scooter that does not have certification, the manufacturer does not show signs of life, and you need certification, you can always certify it yourself in an authorized laboratory, which will carry out tests on the vehicle. But, logically, that will cost money.

The VMP circulation certificate will be mandatory for all electric scooters sold from January 22, 2024. Vehicles purchased before that date are exempt until January 22, 2027.
