Google just released the first Developer Preview of Android 15. This is the first official step for the new release of Android, which will arrive during this year with the first public betas and then arrive in a stable version towards autumn.
With the first Developer Preview of Android 15 we have the opportunity to see what will be the news which will characterize the new version of the green robot. Google announced the availability by giving us an overview of the substantial changes that will characterize Android 15.
Android 15 DP1: what’s new
Improvements are coming to the privacywith the new Android Privacy Sandbox, and also for HealthConnect, the platform that deals with the collection and synchronization of data useful for health and monitoring physical activities. There will also be improvements for the encryption of files in memory, useful for malware protection; new possibilities also arrive partial screen sharingthat is, starting from specific apps or system windows.
In this sense, we underline that some new features are already being tested with Android 14 QPR Beta.
Other news will concern the arrival of new in-app controls for the camera, as well as new standards such as UMP for virtual MIDI apps will be supported. Beyond the changes that largely affect the developerslet’s see what the tangible innovations are already integrated into the first DP of Android 15:
- Here comes the chance to show the HDR/SDR ratio for images. This option is located in Developer Options.
- Haptic feedback when customizing the display brightness level from the Quick settings panel.
- New option to enable or disable the haptic feedback for the keyboard.
- Reduced notification volume when they arrive in series from the same app.
The first Developer Preview of Android 15 obviously implies some bugs of youth. Google reports some problems with its installation, some crashes for the Play Store, as well as the Face Unlock initialization process could cause problems.
Other problems concern the correct display of the interface for unlocking the SIM.
In short, these are problems that they are solvable with some workarounds, but maybe It’s not the perfect time to try Android 15 on your phone that you use every day.
Availability and release schedule
The first Developer Preview of Android 15 is officially available for Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The same is also available via the Android emulator.
Installation can take place only manuallysince this is not a public beta.
Regarding the next Android 15 updates, Google lets us know that at least one will arrive second Developer Preview within March. From April the first ones will arrive public betas of Android 15, which it will be possible to join from the dedicated Google page. These will enter the Platform Stability version in June, while the release of the first stable version is expected after July.
We can hypothesize a first release in August or September at the latest.
