Android TV also definitively says goodbye to Google Play Film: what changes

As we already anticipated last June, Google Play Movies and Android TV have reached their final stages. Play Film was Big G’s proposal for the purchase/rental of films and TV series for 12 years, only to be initially replaced on mobile devices, from 2020, with the new platform Google TV. Consequently, the Mountain View company has decided to remove the Play Film and TV brand almost everywhere, announcing as a final step the definitive cancellation on Android TV from January 17, 2024.

Google Play Movies & TV will no longer be available on Android TV devices or the Google Play website. However, you will still be able to access all the titles purchased previously (including active rentals) on Android TV devices, Google TV devices, the Google TV mobile app (Android and iOS), and YouTube.

Anyone who still sees the Play Film app after January 17th will simply come redirected to the Shop section of Android TV (as has already happened since October).

Google also explains how to access your purchases:

  • On Android TV-based TVs and streaming devices: the Shop tab will contain all previously purchased titles and will allow the purchase/rental of new ones. All purchased titles, including active rentals, can be reached from the row Your library on the Shop tab.
  • On an Android TV-based cable box or set-top box/on a web browser: it will be possible to access all previously purchased titles, including active rentals, directly from the appropriate section in the app YouTube. Similarly, the purchase and rental of new products will also be available via YouTube.
