Linux support for i MacBook of the latest generation is probably not as extensive as you would expect, but from now on you will have a new one optimized distro for your Apple-branded laptop: we’re talking about Fedorawhich finally added native support for i Apple Silicon chips. Be careful, though, because there is one important exception.

To be precise, the distribution with support for Apple chips is called Fedora Asahi Remix and is the result of collaboration between the Fedora Project and the Asahi Linux team. In short, it is a fork based on version 39 of Fedora, with native support for all chips Apple M1 And Apple M2therefore compatible with MacBook, Mac Mini, Mac Studio and new generation iMac.

As you may have noticed, support for devices with chips in the series is missing Apple M3, launched last October. This is probably due to the limited time available for the development and testing of Fedora Asahi Remix on such recent hardware, so we expect support to arrive in the next few months, perhaps with the Fedora version 40.

The development of Fedora Asahi Remix actually began in 2021 and only now has it managed to bear the first fruits. The distro offers two different solutions for the desktop environment: you can choose between GNOME 45 And KDE Plasma 5.27 LTSboth of which use the Wayland system by default.

Curious to try this distro on your Mac? Then all you have to do is go to the official website of the Fedora Asahi Remix project and follow the instructions installation instructions. The team in charge of the project ensures that it is the“more refined” Linux experience for devices with Apple Silicon, but you’ll have to check it out for yourself!
