PS5 Pro is just the beginning: Sony is preparing the ground to reach 8K at 60 fps

As we have learned in recent days, the new PS5 Pro will usher in a new type of technology that can rival DLSS Of NVIDIA And FSR Of AMD, but this will only be the first step (do you know what DLSS is and how it works?).

According to specifications leaked a few days ago, in fact the new console (codenamed Trinity) will exploit the technology PSSR to get higher resolutions, and would work with the SKD 9.00 to target 4K 60 FPS and 8K 30 FPS.

The case studies: the comparison between PS5 and PS5 Pro

Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, however, discovered that the goal is much more ambitious, and according to internal documents that he was able to view (but not disclose), Sony would aim (not with PS5 Pro) to 4K 120FPS And 8K 60FPS.

At the moment it is not clear whether these objectives can be achieved, but these numbers give an indication of how much Sony believes in its PSSR.

To test the potential of the tool, the journalist shared data from two case studies of games developed by Sony.

The first aims for a quality close to 1800p in the mode Quality and 60 FPS in mode Performance. These would be the results:

  • PS5:
    • Quality Mode: 1800p at 30 FPS
    • Performance Mode: 1080p at 60 FPS
  • PS5 Pro:
    • 1440p at 60 FPS with PSSR

The second case study instead would have had the objective of adding the Ray Tracing to the game. In this case the results would have been:

  • PS5: 60 FPS without Ray Tracing
  • PS5 Pro: 60 FPS with Ray Tracing

The potential of PSSR is enormous

The potential of PSSR is therefore huge, and Henderson explained how the technology PSSR ask about 250MB, including 180 MB from the PSML library and 64 MB from the game. Not only that, but it would only take two milliseconds to transform an image from 1080p to 4K.

The only problem? Don’t expect to get 120 FPS at 4K and 60 FPS at 8K with PS5 Pro. As we anticipated, due to hardware limitations, this is the internal target for PSSR for future iterations of the console, and it is not even known if they will be achieved.
