Samsung announces UFS 5.0 memories: another step towards AI

It’s been a couple of years since Samsung Semiconductor announced the new ones UFS 4.0 memories for smartphones. From that moment on, the Korean company employed this hardware on the series Galaxy S23, the 2023 leaflets and the latest top of the range Galaxy S24 series. Now, however, the company has decided to turn the page and look forward.

Samsung Semiconductor, in fact, has released a roadmap on the social media platform Weixin, confirming its plans for the next generation of Universal Flash Storage (UFS) solutions. The document highlights that the Korean company intends to release UFS 4.0 4-lane CS next year and then move on to UFS 5.0 in 2027. According to Samsung Semiconductor, the new 4-lane UFS 4.0 will ensure a step change from around 4GB/s to 8GB/s. In 2027, however, UFS 5.0 memories will allow an even greater step forward, with speeds above 10 GB/s.

The company will start mass production of the new UFS 4.0 before 2025 and will combine two UFS controllers to increase sequential read speed.

Therefore, this novelty should guarantee better loading times and especially more performance for apps that rely on artificial intelligence. As regards the debut, the new UFS 4.0 memories could be used on the Galaxy S25 series devices while the UFS 5.0 ones directly on the future Galaxy S27 line.

Finally, but this is only a hypothesis, the future Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 will use the same UFS 4.0 solution already seen on the Galaxy S24 as the 4-lane UFS 4.0 probably won’t be ready for mass production when the new foldables are launched.
