The mega solar wind farm in the Calabrian sea: what it is and how it will work

Perhaps not everyone knows that a off the Calabrian coast a large park will be built for energy productionbased on wind and solar energy generation.

We are talking about the big project he would like to realize SolarDuck, a spin-off of Damen Shipyards, a major shipbuilder in the Netherlands. The project is realized in collaboration between SolarDuck, the Italian investment fund Arrow Capital and the Italian developer New Developments.

The exact location identified for the construction of the wind-solar park would be in Gulf of Taranto, off the Calabrian coast of Corigliano-Rossano. The park that will be built in the Ionian Sea is expected to work at a nominal power of approx 540 megawatts (MW). This power should be generated for 420 MW from the wind farm and for 120 MW on the solar side.

Precisely the latter will be made with enormous aluminum plates placed at 3 meters from the water levelso as to reduce the impact of rough waters and salt deposits on the panels.

Clearly there will be walkways and anti-slip fences for access and maintenance.

Precisely in this context, SolarDuck is conducting a pilot project to create a 5 MW park of a maximum duration of three years with the energy company RWE in the North Sea, 12 km from Dutch coast.

As regards the project in Italy, which is obviously significantly larger and more important, it is expected that its completion will take place by 2028.
