How to filter and disable explicit content on Spotify

Spotify stands out as one of the most popular streaming applications worldwide. Its appeal lies in providing access to an extensive library of music content, including millions of songs and podcasts.

However, Within Spotify’s wide offering, there are songs that are not suitable for all ages. This type of music is classified as explicit content, but what exactly does that mean?

Explicit content on Spotify includes songs that contain foul language, references to violence, drugs, sex, or other topics that could be considered inappropriate for minors.

It’s important to note that the service uses a combination of algorithms to automatically identify and flag this type of content. Songs or podcasts that meet this description are identified with a small lyric icon “AND” next to the song title.

Now, if you prefer to avoid listening to explicit content, either due to your own preferences or because you want to keep control over what your children listen to if you have a Spotify Premium family plan, there is a way to filter and deactivate these songs.

Steps to disable explicit content on Spotify

Performing this procedure is easier than you imagine. You can do it both from the mobile application and from the desktop version on your computer.

It is important to mention that while it is not possible to remove explicit content from the general Spotify library, you can prevent it from playing automatically. To do this, follow these steps:

From the mobile app

  • Open Spotify on your mobile.
  • Tap your profile photo.
  • Then, click on Settings and privacy.
  • In the list of options search and select Content preferences and deactivate Allow explicit content.

From the desktop app

  • Open Spotify on your computer.
  • Click on your profile photo and select Setting.
  • In Explicit content disable the option.

Now, if you have a Spotify Premium family plan, you can filter explicit content for specific family members. In this case you have to open any web browser and access your account.

Choose Manage membersclick the arrow next to the name of the member you want to prevent from listening to songs not suitable for their age, and turn off the option Allow explicit content.

Spotify offers you access to millions of songs, but not all of them are appropriate for all audiences. If you want to enjoy music with your family without worrying about the language or lyrical content, you can easily turn off explicit content.
